Chaos

There comes a moment, in glass, when matter ceases to obey. It happens without warning: the surface thickens, ripples, contracts, and what was meant to be uniform escapes all control. Chaos begins right there, at the point where the human hand stops and the hand of matter begins again.

That sheet is too irregular to be cut, too alive to take a print. It is the reject of the rejects, the one piece not even recovery could recover. It was meant to go back to the furnace and begin all over again. Chaos is the gesture that stops it at the very last instant. It is a flaw that becomes design.

The barrel-shaped top has two faces: on one side it remains clear, smooth, still. On the other, it turns to crust, to rock, to earth that heat has passed through. The bases tell the same story, textured and uneven on one side, transparent and gleaming on the other. Their enveloping, organic form seems to rise out of the ground and hold up the surface seamlessly, with no screws and no joints.

The table is all glass, from beginning to end. There is nothing to take apart, nothing to separate: when its time is over, Chaos will not become waste to be broken down, but will simply return to the matter it came from. The circle that held it is the same one that welcomes it home.

Chaos evokes the primordial disorder of a time when forms had yet to be decided. The pattern that runs through each sheet was never designed and will never appear again, which is why the edition is limited and every Chaos table is one of a kind.

Like the Ensō, it is born in a single breath and is never corrected, never repeated, never retouched. One continuous gesture, with no beginning and no end.
