Sustainability

For us at La Gala Home, sensitivity and respect towards nature, the force that creates and inspires, are not a goal but the founding value that guides every aspect of our work. We honour the noble elegance of glass because it is a sustainable material and resource for future generations: versatile, transformable, and infinitely regenerable and recyclable.

Our waste doesn’t leave the factory. It becomes furniture.

La Gala Home was born within Acheruntiaglass, a company that has been acid-etching and sandblasting large float glass sheets in Basilicata, southern Italy, since 2000. That process generates offcuts, out-of-tolerance sheets and surfaces that fail quality control. Before cutting a new sheet, we turn to those. It is the rule La Gala Home was founded on, just a few metres from where our pieces are designed.

Almost all of our production waste stays here and becomes furniture. Only a small share (13–14%) takes the road to the remelting furnace, a thousand kilometres away, with the emissions that journey entails.

The rest of the discarded glass (86–87%) is brought back into the cycle through two textures, which are also two opposite ways of understanding the material.

Metaglass is the path of intention. Natural marble, onyx and quartzite surfaces are digitised, reworked and reproduced on the recovered sheet using HD UV printing, with veining that runs continuously from front to back. It is the route that absorbs most of the waste, and it is a decision someone makes: the design exists before the glass does.

Saturaglass is the path of chance. Inevitably, yet unpredictably, the etching solution becomes saturated. The sheet that emerges is smooth and glossy on one side and textured and chaotic on the other. It is traced with encrustations, craquelure and branching crystal formations that no design decision could ever have produced. No two sheets are alike, and that is why every Saturaglass piece is unique.

The landscape we leave untouched

The preciousness of rare materials such as marble, quartzite and onyx comes alive in our surfaces without a single quarry being opened. Metaglass captures their depth and veining through the transparent brilliance of glass, leaving intact the landscape those materials would otherwise come from.

Total vitrum: the end that becomes a new beginning

Our pieces are total vitrum designs. Glass is not a veneer but the very material of their form, structure and surface. At the end of its life, the glass re-enters the same stream it came from, because it is a raw material that can be regenerated endlessly with no loss of quality.

What we choose

We rely on a renowned float glass manufacturer, certified to ISO 14001 and holding an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).

Our coatings are water-based. They are designed not only to bring out the natural, marble-like beauty of our textures but also to give our products protection and breathability in a sustainable way. They are sourced from a company with ISO 14001 environmental certification.

We have also chosen non-toxic, odourless HP inks that are safe for indoor living. These too come from ISO 14001-certified manufacturers and carry GREENGUARD Gold certification.
